ABSTRACT
The Cryptocoryne species of the Malay Peninsula
mainly belong to the 2n = 34 chromosome group in the southern areas and
the 2n = 36 chromosome group in the northern. The identification of the
different species has mostly been straightforward, but in a
number of cases it has proven difficult, these representing natural
interspecific hybrids. Our results show that artificial hybrids are easily
obtained, and it is possible to resynthesize the naturally occurring
interspecific hybrids. The study also points out that it should be possible to
find and identify more naturally-occurring hybrids
than those presently known from the Malay Peninsula.
