Artificial hybrids in Cryptocoryne (Araceae) 5: Hybridization with species from Sumatera, Indonesia

ABSTRACT

We attempted to hybridize species of Cryptocoryne from Sumatera mainly within the chromosome groups of 2n = 34, 68 & 102, and we also attempted crosses between Sumateran species and those from the Malay Peninsula and Borneo with equal chromosome numbers. The success of obtained hybrids was somewhat lower (6%) than that found in the previous studies (Malay Peninsula 8%; Borneo 9%, Peninsular Malaysia – Borneo 11%), probably due to inadequate cultivation conditions. We succeeded in resynthesizing C. ×zukalii nothovar. sumateraensis, one of the naturally occurring hybrids of Sumatera. Combinations including the tetraploid C. bangkaensis (2n = 68) contributed 69% of the successfully raised hybrids. Our results suggest that it may be possible to find and identify more naturally occurring hybrids than those presently known from Sumatera.
