Sulawesi [Araceae, tribe Alocasieae (Schott) A.Hay], with notes on tribal
classification for the paraphyletic grade of ‘Old World Colocasioids’

ABSTRACT
A new species of Alocasia from Sulawesi, Indonesia, already in
horticultural circulation internationally for some years, is described and
illustrated. It is ascribed, in view of years of molecular-phylogenetic
consensus on relationships amongst the old world
elements of Engler’s Colocasioideae (now viewed as a
paraphyletic basal grade of the Pistia–Dracunculus Clade), to the tribe Alocasieae (Schott) A.Hay,
a taxon newly raised to tribal level here. The tribal
classification of the genera involved is outlined, and
the new tribe Englerareae A.Hay is also established. Key words: Sulawesi, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, Pisteae, Protareae, Englerareae, Colocasieae, Alocasieae.
